Why your January power bill doubled, and what your heat had to do with it
Every February, after the first real cold stretch works through the Carolinas, the same ritual plays out at kitchen tables from Chester to Charlotte. Somebody opens the power bill, says a word we cannot print, and starts hunting for explanations. The kids left lights on. Somebody’s mining crypto in the garage. The power company is up to something. The meter is broken.
We have been invited into a lot of those conversations over the years, usually through a side door: someone finally calls about the heat never quite keeping up, and the bill comes up while we are standing in the hallway. So here is the explanation the bill itself never gives you. In most doubled-bill houses around here, the answer is hiding in the air handler, it has a name, and once you know what to look for, the whole mystery takes about ten minutes to solve.

Compare that to a heat pump, which moves heat instead of making it and delivers two to three units of warmth per unit of electricity in our mild winters. Same wire, same meter, wildly different arithmetic. A house heated all January by strips can genuinely spend triple what the identical house next door spends with a working heat pump. That is the entire mystery of most doubled bills, told in one paragraph.
The strips are supposed to be understudies. They exist for defrost cycles and the coldest few mornings of the year, when even a good heat pump wants help. Used that way, they cost a few dollars a season and nobody notices. The trouble starts when the understudy takes over the show.
Story one: the house that never had anything else
Plenty of Carolina homes, especially older houses, mill-village stock, and a surprising share of rentals, were built with strips as the only heat source. Then pull one winter bill and one summer bill and compare. Some gap is normal, heating always costs more here than cooling. Different suspects. Gas houses with electric bill spikes usually have a different appliance story, though the furnace blower and a failing igniter can contribute. If the gas bill itself spiked, duct leaks and a furnace losing efficiency are worth a look. Either way the pattern matters: sudden change means something changed, and instruments can find it.
Is emergency heat ever the right setting?
Yes, in an actual emergency: the heat pump has physically failed and you need heat tonight while a repair gets scheduled. It exists to keep the house safe, at toaster prices, for days, never for months. If it has been on since a cold snap two winters ago, that switch has cost more than the repair it was avoiding.
