The fix has existed for years and still feels like a secret in this market: the ductless mini-split. One compact outdoor unit, one quiet head on the wall, a three-inch hole between them, and the space joins the comfortable part of your property year-round. Installation, done properly
A standard install runs a day or less: head placement chosen for airflow and, in workshops, away from the dust stream, the outdoor unit set on a pad or brackets with clearance to breathe, lines run cleanly through one sealed penetration, and a dedicated electrical circuit with a proper disconnect, run to code, no exceptions. Done right, the whole assembly disappears into the property and just works.
The corners you do not want cut are electrical and refrigerant handling. An overloaded circuit or a sloppy line connection writes the service calls for the next five years, and a leak-prone flare fitting will empty a system slowly enough that the machine limps for a year before anyone understands why. Can a mini-split really heat a garage in January?
In this climate, comfortably. Modern heads are heat pumps with solid cold-weather output, and a Carolina January is well within their range for an insulated space. The workshop that was unusable from December through February becomes a normal room with a remote control, which is precisely the point of the whole exercise, and the morning warm-up can even run on a schedule so the space is ready when you are.
How loud are they really?
The indoor head at low fan is quieter than a refrigerator, quiet enough that people double-check it is actually running. The outdoor unit hums politely at a level that will not annoy you, your podcast recording, or the neighbor whose window faces it. If your reference point is a window unit rattling in a frame, prepare to be a little emotional about the difference.
Do I need a permit and dedicated electrical?
Yes to proper electrical: a dedicated circuit with a disconnect at the unit, run to code, included in our installs as a matter of course. What size do I need for a two-car garage?
It depends on the envelope more than the footprint: insulation, door quality, sun exposure, and what heat-making equipment lives inside. Can it dehumidify the space without cooling it much?
Most units have a dedicated dry mode that prioritizes moisture removal, useful for shoulder seasons when the garage is damp but not hot.
