Squeal, rattle, boom: what that weird HVAC noise is trying to tell you
Our voicemail is a symphony. People hold their phones up to air handlers, point them at condensers, press them against closet doors. We have diagnosed systems from thirty seconds of shaky audio more times than we can count, and honestly, we are proud of it. Machines confess through sound. A healthy system has a voice you stop hearing, a steady whoosh and hum that becomes part of the house. When the voice changes, the machine is describing its problem with impressive specificity, if you know the vocabulary. So here is the vocabulary: the big noises, translated from HVAC into English, sorted by how fast you should reach for the phone.
The short version
- New noises are information, never background. The system is telling you exactly which part is failing, in its own language, and it rarely lies about it.
- Squeals are belts and bearings asking for service. Rattles are loose hardware and debris. Booms at furnace startup are delayed ignition, and they get respect.

The squeal: something is spinning unhappily
A high-pitched squeal, especially at startup, is the classic voice of a belt or a bearing. Older air handlers with belt-driven blowers squeal when the belt wears, glazes, or slips, exactly like a car used to on cold mornings. Direct-drive systems squeal when motor bearings run dry, and the pitch typically rises with speed and worsens over weeks.
Neither version is an emergency in its first days, and both are wonderfully cheap compared to what they become. A worn belt is a quick swap. A dry bearing caught early is a motor service or an affordable motor replacement. A bearing ignored until it seizes takes the motor with it, sometimes overheats the works, and turns a small invoice into a genuinely annoying one.
The useful detail for your phone call: when does it squeal? Startup only suggests belts and slippage. Constant and rising with fan speed points at bearings. Only in heating mode narrows it further. Thirty seconds of when and how loud does most of our diagnostic work before we arrive.
The rattle: something has come loose
Rattles are the most common and least alarming family of noises, and they are almost always hardware doing what hardware does over years of vibration: coming loose. Panel screws back themselves out and the panel buzzes. Duct straps loosen in the crawlspace and a run ticks against a joist. Debris, twigs, acorns, the occasional toy, finds its way into the outdoor unit and clatters around the fan.
The outdoor-unit rattle deserves a look sooner rather than later, because a stick sitting in the fan’s path can nick a blade, unbalance the assembly, and graduate the rattle into a wobble that stresses the fan motor. Kill power to the unit at the disconnect, look through the top grille, and if you can see the culprit resting loose, you can often remove it yourself and accept our congratulations.
Interior rattles that come and go with blower speed are usually panels and ducts, and while they rarely threaten the machine, they will absolutely colonize your sanity at two in the morning. The fix is tightening, isolating, and occasionally a strategic piece of foam, which is the least glamorous work we do and some of the most appreciated.
The boom: ignition running late
A gas furnace that goes boom or whump at startup is performing a small, contained explosion it was never meant to perform. Delayed ignition means gas flows for a beat too long before lighting, and when it finally catches, it catches all at once. The sound is unmistakable, a soft thump from the closet or crawlspace at the start of a heating cycle, sometimes strong enough to flex the ductwork with a metallic boom.
The causes are mundane, dirty burners, a weak igniter, misadjusted gas flow, but the pattern is one to respect, because each delayed light stresses the heat exchanger, and the heat exchanger is the wall between your air supply and combustion gases. This is a call-us-this-week noise, and a stop-using-it-if-it-worsens noise, treated with the seriousness that anything involving the words gas and explosion deserves, even at small scale.

A loud buzzing from the outdoor unit that runs without the fan spinning often means a seized fan motor or a failed capacitor trying desperately to start it, and the longer it buzzes, the hotter things get. A rapid clicking at startup that never becomes a running system is usually a relay or contactor chattering, or a control board failing to close the deal.
Buzzing at the indoor unit or, more seriously, at the breaker panel deserves prompt attention, because sustained electrical buzzing anywhere is heat being made where heat does not belong. And the system that trips its breaker repeatedly is not being dramatic, it is being protected: something downstream is drawing more current than it should, and resetting the breaker over and over is overruling the one safety device doing its job.
Storm season adds its own electrical chapter around here. A hiss deserves more respect. Persistent hissing near the coil or the refrigerant lines can be a leak singing its way out, especially if it comes with fading cooling performance. A pressure-relief hiss from a gas appliance is rarer and more serious. Either way, hissing plus poor performance equals a call with instruments, because refrigerant does not top itself back up and leaks never negotiate.
Dripping you can hear in the walls or ceiling is past the diagnostic stage: that is water landing where water should never be, and the visit is urgent by drywall math alone. A single confident click at startup and shutdown is normal life, that is a relay doing its job. The concerning versions are rapid-fire clicking that never becomes a running system, or clicking that recently got louder or multiplied. Changes are the tell, never the existence of sound.
The outdoor unit is loud generally. Is that age or trouble?
Some of both, usually. Compressors get louder as they wear, and older units simply run louder than modern ones by design. What matters is trajectory: gradually louder over years is aging, suddenly louder this month is a symptom, and a new NOISE on top of loud is worth a listen. If the neighbors can hear your condenser cycling from their porch, an inspection would not be wasted.
Is the whooshing in my vents normal?
Steady whoosh is just air moving, and it is the healthiest sound in this article. Whistling means air being forced through a gap or a too-small return, ticking means a duct expanding against framing as it warms, and rumbling means turbulence somewhere worth checking. If the whoosh got noticeably louder right after a filter change, the new filter may be too restrictive for your blower, which is a two-minute conversation and a different box next time.
